Massignac is a charming French village that sits astride the Moulde river. It has a circular layout, shady streets and a bright square that is the perfect place to enjoy a drink on the terrace. An ideal spot to simply savour life.
The area also shows signs of early settlements: the Thauzac (Tauzat) dolmen was erected between 5,000 and 3,000 BC.
The modern-day building dates back to the 18th century and adjoins a fountain devoted to Saint Paul, whose holy waters were said to have the power to rid children of their nightmares.
Under the Empire, markets and fairs were held on the 20th day of each month in the covered marketplace that used to lie behind the church, as well as in the town streets and on the local fairground.
The marketplace interfered with traffic and the way out of town towards Chabanais. It was torn down in 1881, which led to a significant drop in the number of people visiting the markets and fairs—a problem compounded by the development of the railway in 1889.
In the heart of the Charente Limousine region, a stone’s throw away from Angoulême, Cognac and Limoges on the edge of Massignac village, discover the Domaine des Etangs.
With its 1000 hectares of woods, its sunken paths and clear ponds protected by its château and its 7 cottages spread across the infinite surrounding meadows, Domaine des Etangs is as intimate for a couple, as it is simple and serene for a family, limitless and open for a seminar.
Forget the days which fly by and make the most of the natural beauty of a timeless Domaine. Enjoy its spaces of bien-être scattered right up to inside its mill, its tennis court floating on water, its restaurant overlooking the valley, the covert Roman baths and open-air swimming pool in the height of the summer... Let the flight of the dragonfly, hostess of the Domaine, guide you to a simple, peaceful and pleasant well-being.
The Château
This is a simple château, gracious in its humility; bedecked in light stone, which strikes the perfect balance between earth and sky.
It maintains the charm and the spirit of a typical family home, as well as some of the mystery of its origins, which can be dated back to the 11th century.
Here you will find 7 vast suites and bedrooms, each of which are as different from one another as the stars after which they are named. On the ground floor, the library, the dining room, the smoking room and various lounges allow guests to while the time away with a book, a meal or a tipple.
The château’s interior is interspersed here and there with antiques, tailor-made creations, unique objects and original artwork. A continuous dialogue is created between old and new, boldness and simplicity, and is brought to life by the interior designer, Isabelle Stanislas.
The Longère
A long building with typically rural architecture, the Longère consists of 4 different suites, each devoted to a particular season of the year.
A different colour dominates the interior of each one, and is carefully chosen so that it blends harmoniously with each seasonal theme. All are different but each provides a vast and generous living space.
Interior designer, Isabelle Stanislas, created the individual atmospheres for these suites by playing with various different materials and lighting methods: an off-white varnished chair here, a beige monobloc chair there, and on the floor, a tailor-made rug, created exclusively for Domaine des Etangs.
The Farmhouse Cottages
On one of your strolls, you may come across one of farmhouse cottages. There are others, here and there, between two ponds, hidden in a verdant hollow, or sitting in a meadow which stretches out towards the horizon. There are six in total.
Warm, cosy and transcending the passing of seasons and even centuries, each one is constructed out of stone, glass and wood, making use of the age-old/ traditional savoir-faire of expert craftsmen.
They are easily accessible, thanks to the Blue Summer electric cars which have been made available to the guests.
Restaurants
Every dining experience at Domaine des Etangs draws on its individual setting. Dyades is the main restaurant. However, the Domaine offers a wide variety of settings and taste experiences through which to savour Michelin star Chef Fabien Beaufour’s cuisine.
The farmhouses have their own "doorstep" service. There is Monade, the chateau’s dining room, which can be booked for private functions. The fields and the woods offer an al fresco experience, as do the barbecue options… Different combinations every location; every mood.
In each case, Chef Fabien Beaufour works with local growers to reduce the journey from earth to table.
This "obsession" with shortening the food chain is undoubtedly one of the reasons that led Fabien to Domaine des Etangs. Here, the crayfish come from the Moulde river, which winds through the 1,000 hectares of woodland and ponds at the Domaine; the fruit comes from the trees; the vegetables from the kitchen garden. Everything is in tune with the seasons and what the earth is willing to offer.
Wellness
The emblem of Domaine des Etangs is the dragonfly. And, like the dragonfly, everything here centres around a delicate equilibrium, a harmony between seasons, elements, complementary principles, and senses.
For the past 280 million years, the life of the dragonfly has played out in the balance between the waters of its birth and the air of its existence, between the earth and the iridescence of its wings. Framing its slender feather-point body, these wings carry the dragonfly wherever it desires.
This quest for equilibrium in all things leads us not to strive for the most, but the best of every place, season and moment. And if we succeed in this, it is not to the diminish beauty or calmness of what is already there, but rather to imbue it with a sense of stillness.
If there is one thing to keep in mind, it is that Moulin des Etangs is not about feeling better – it is about feeling good.
Events
While the Domaine is the perfect place to take a stroll, connect with nature and settle into the simple pleasures of living in the present moment, it is also a place that is capable of transforming itself into a lively events venue for guests, or a peaceful location for working undisturbed.
The entire Domaine des Etangs estate can be reserved for special occasions. Treat your customers, friends or family to an unforgettable weekend in a timeless location with an array of high-end services.
