OBERNAI. ODILIE – THE PATRON SAINT OF ALSACE

Obernai is a charming village nestled at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile on the famous Route des Vins (Wine Route). Its little winding streets, old houses with multi-coloured tiles, ensigns, ramparts, well and statue of St. Odile attracts the tourists. During the excursion you will visit the Mont Sainte-Odile Abbey with a holy well healing eyes.

ALSACE WINE ROUTE

The Alsace Wine Route is famous for its exceptional natural beauty. It winds its way from north to south, for more than 170 kilometres along the eastern foothills of the Vosges. Visitors can easily explore the heart of the vineyards, along numerous vineyard paths leading to the crest of each slope, where signs explain the work of the winegrowers and the diversity of the grape varieties grown. You are welcomed into "winstubs" (local cafés) and tasting cellars which constantly celebrate their passion for wine.

This excursion can be organised at your choice.

  • One of the most beautiful medieval villages of Alsace, such as Obernai, Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé, Eguisheim or Kaysersberg where you can taste the wine at wine cellars
  • Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle
  • The old city of Colmar – the centre of local wine production

ALSACE AND WARS:FROM THE FEUDAL LORDS' CASTLES TO THE MAGINOT LINE

During its long history Alsace became a stage for many military conflicts: starting from the Gallic war of Ancient Romans and finishing with the Second World War. Many historic monuments and castles have been preserved and reconstructed since that time.

During the excursion you are invited to see:
  • Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle – built in the 12th century, now is one of the most popular monuments in France. Its purpose was to watch over the wine and wheat routes to the North and the silver and salt routes from West to East.
  • Riquewihr – is a medieval town right in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards, classified among the "Most Beautiful Villages in France".
  • Neuf-Brisach – is a fortified town, considered as Vauban's masterpiece. Its architecture is unique in Europe, and the Citadel is listed as part of the world Heritage by UNESCO.
  • The Vauban Dam in Strasbourg was also built by the military engineer Vauban. An attractive panoramic terrace has been laid out at the top of the building, from where visitors can admire the layout of the town and its network of canals.
  • The fort at Schoenenbourg, the most important Maginot Line fortification in Alsace, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can tour the barracks, the kitchens, the command post, the generating plant, see gun positions, retractable gun turrets, magazines for the ammunition.
  • The Mutzig fortress was the first German fortification to be made of concrete, entirely armored, ventilated and lit by electrical power. It was the most powerful and largest fortification in the German Empire in 1914.

COLMAR THE CITY OF ARTS

Colmar is a town with many attractions and an undeniable charm including half-timbered houses, canals and the flower-decked town centre, etc. It offers all the intimacy of a medium-sized town and a remarkably diverse range of heritage sites!
During the excursion you will discover Unterlinden Museum. A town definitely worth visiting for anyone keen to discover the gentle Alsatian lifestyle!
In the history of Colmar such famous figures have left their marks as: Voltaire, Martin Schongauer, Auguste Bartholdi and the others.
Since 1989 Colmar is known for its musical festivals directed by the famous Russian musician Vladimir Spivakov. Remark: This excursion can be started from Strasbourg. It is very convenient to go to Colmar by train accompanied by the guide. You will have the possibility to admire from the window the picturesque views of the Vosges mountains and the ruins of the Castles. The guide will tell you some interesting legends about these castles on your way to Colmar.
