Champagne Wine Road

An example of a one-day guided-tour of Champagne region

The Champagne wine road winds up and down the hillsides of the "Reims Mountain" – actually a small ridge – amid renowned vineyards and colourful villages. Although it is only 286 m high, that "mountain" does exist and is designated that way by locals.

  • This programme will first take you to a lighthouse: again, not a myth, but a real lighthouse of a classical style erected among the vineyards by an odd fish – no pun intended – during the 19th century. From there, you will be able to gaze upon the northern slopes of the Reims Mountain and you will hear about the features of the Champagne wine region. The view there is indeed remarkable.
  • 30-minute drive to a wine-grower in a nearby village; admiring the landscapes.
  • You will then visit a wine-grower – at their privately-owned wine-growing estate in a village – who will tell you all about their family's history while you tour the cellar. A tasting of three of their sparkling wines will conclude the visit.
  • 35 to 40-minute drive to Épernay (countryside).
  • Lunch
  • 15-minute drive to Hautvillers (a UNESCO World heritage village).
  • Guided tour on foot in one of the 100 most beautiful French villages, featuring curious tin signs on village houses and an antique dealer in a beautiful floral setting.
  • The inventor of champagne, dom Pierre Pérignon, lived and worked in a monastery there in the 17th century. During the French Revolution, in 1789, the monastery was torn down but the church where dom Pérignon was buried still stands. The tour will take you to this church and end at a viewpoint providing you with an exceptional panorama of the famous Marne river valley (UNESCO World heritage).
  • 35-minute drive to the village Bouzy (countryside).
  • Guided tour of a snail farm. You will be given the opportunity to taste a hot dish of snails with a glass of champagne.
  • 35 to 40-minute drive back to Reims.
Please note: this is a fascinating and "tasty" tour among remarkable landscapes. Therefore, starting early in the morning will enable you to take your time and enjoy every minute.
