Mont-Salève

Geneva’s home mountain lies around 900 meters above the Jet d'Eau, on French terrain, yet at the heart of Geneva. And the mountain has been connected to mountain rail since over 120 years.
As of 1887 a steam-powered tram travelled at the foot of the Salève; 1894 an electric-driven cog railway made its way along the rock face to Krete, and the first cableway commenced operations in1932. But the impressive views over canto Geneva and the Jura, as far as Mont Blanc on a clear day have remained exactly the same.

Numerous hiking paths lead to the 150 meter-high observatory from the mountain station. And the "Grande Varappe" originates from the French word for climbing.
