Standing above the old Via Clodia, which connected Siena to Rome, Castello di Velona was built as a medieval fortress in the 11th century. The Watchtower remains intact from the 12th century, as a watch post over the amazing Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.

The Castle has been renovated in 2003, when it became the first 5 Stars Hotel in all Montalcino. The result is the modern-day Castello di Velona Resort.

With the aromas of the herbs and spices and typical colours of the Tuscan countryside, the Brunello di Montalcino vineyards and olive groves surrounding the Castle, the Hotel’s wine and food offer fully satisfies of body and soul, both in the rustic Il Brunello in the historical part of the Castle, and in the modern setting of the Settimo Senso Restaurant, created in the new wing, or at Dolce Vita by the Pool where Mediterranean Cuisine is served for lunch.


This is the first and only Resort with a Dining Around Program where Full Board or Half Board can be enjoyed in 11 different Restaurants both within the Resort or in the nearby Countryside, with 4 Restaurants that are Michelin Star rated: il Silene 1*, Cum Quibus 1*, Da Caino 2** and Bracali 2** Michelin Stars.

The rooms inside look onto the Val d’Orcia and Brunello vineyards thanks to the panoramic terraces of the Castle 3 restaurants, one to the east, exposed to the first rays of the sun, the other to the west, pointing towards the sunset, and the third by the pool with amazing 360° views.

Here guests experience complete sensory emotions, immersed in the silence and romance of the landscape, sampling fine wines and the olive oil produced by the Castle estate, and tasting the specialities of regional Tuscan and Mediterranean Italian cuisine, a blend of creativity in the kitchen and respect for the seasons and for genuine ingredients.

The outdoor pools, filled with hot thermal water by the Castle Hot Springs overlook Val d'Orcia and offer a stunning view of the surrounding countryside and the vineyards of the castle. Here the view sweeps 360° degrees around on the rolling Tuscan hills with the feeling of being magically suspended on the landscape.
The water games and hydro massage beds in each of the pools, tickle with an energetic, yet relaxing massage that stimulates circulation and eases tension. A large area is dedicated to the solarium with large awnings that provide shade, king size gazebos and comfortable chaise longue to ensure a total relaxation and a pure wellness experience. Inside the Spa, guests will find a very private bath with Jacuzzi in the wet area, and a larger circular pool connected by a small tunnel to the outdoor pools, to comfortably swim outside in the water embrace.
